my last history presentation

 Someone had to die because Romans liked watching people die. Someone had to die because Romans thought that Roman Gods liked watching them fight. Someone had to sacrifice themselves so others could have some 'fun'. Who is this somebody? They are the Roman gladiators.

 Hello everyone. My name is Yewon Lee and I am in Class 13. Today, I will first talk about who the gladiators were and where they fought. Second, I will talk about the weapons they used and what happened after they lost in the battle. Finally, I will talk about one of the most famous gladiator.

Gladiators were usually criminals, prisoners from wars or slaves. Sometimes, it was men who got paid. Of course they didn't want to do it, they usually had some kind of story and needed money badly. They fought in the Roman Coliseum which was built in 70~80 AD. 50,000~ 87,000 people could sit in the Coliseum. The Coliseum was built for public entertainment. For example, the entertainment in Roman generation was killing criminals or watching gladiators fight. The rich people sit at the front where they saw everything and poor people sat at the back where they could hardly see anything.

They couldn't even see what weapons they were holding. The weapons they used depended on which kind of gladiators they were. For example, if you were a secture, you fought with a sword and sheild. If you were a retiarii, you fought with nets and a trident. If you were a hoplomachi, you fought in a suit of armor. If you lost in the battle, your opponent first stabbed you into the neck or shoulder with a sword. Then, he stabbed you in the heart with a dagger. Then you got dragged out of the arena by playing of trumpets. 

One of the most famous gladiator was Spartacus. He was one of the prisoners from the war of Thrace. He was sent to a gladiatorial school near Capua. He was trained there to fight as a gladiator and fought with Roman gladiators after he was fullly trained. He died in 71 BC. There is a lot of stories about his death but no one knows which one is the right one yet. 

Today, I talked about who the gladiators were, where they fought, weapons they used, what happened after they died and about the famous gladiator, Spartacus.Thank you for listening to my presentation.
